Spring is here and you can already feel it!
Everywhere you turn your head, you see flowers blooming. At your backyard, next to the sidewalks, at your terrace, even on rocks. A truly spectacular view!
Unfortunately, you don’t see that in most cities anymore. Though I’m among those lucky ones living in an island and I get to experience it.
You’re walking down the street and you see wild flowers everywhere! Sometimes words can’t really describe how beautiful this feels.
Spring is a true inspiration for me and since we’re talking about flowers, I’ve got something for you!
Today we’re going to upcycled beautiful flowers with egg carton box at almost no cost at all! You’ll only need your good mood and patience.
The best part?
I’ll show you the exacts steps how to make beautiful upcycled flowers by using only two egg carton boxes, a little bit of glue and acrylic colors. That was it!
I love the fact that everything is made out of recyclable materials! These are the exact same stuff that most of us throw in the garbage. How impressive is that?
I’ve got many upcycling ideas and there are more coming up in the future.
You’ll find out that it takes a lot of effort to craft these flowers but there’s also a simpler version. So, no need to worry!
However, I’d like to show you the best version and hence, more complicated. Who said that we don’t like challenges?
So let’s get started!
Materials we’re going to use
Tools we’re going to need
As you’ll see from the pictures, I’ve got three different colors of egg carton boxes. If you prefer, you can leave them as they are without coloring them. Sometimes, the color of the carton box is pretty enough.
Besides the different colors, there is a great chance that the shape is also different but there’s no need to get confused. The following steps can be applied to any egg carton box.
How to make upcycled flowers from egg carton box step by step
I place all the materials and tools on our workspace.
I begin cutting the egg carton box just like the one that is marked with the blue marker. I do the same thing for all the egg carton boxes.
It’s time for some calculations.
For each flower that we’re going to make, we need to cut three egg cups.
Based on the number and type of carton boxes, you can judge how many flowers you can make.
Besides the flowers, I also made small leaves. You can get four leaves for every egg cup you cut.
Bear in mind that this project takes a lot of time and I want to let you know that it took me more than a day to complete all the flowers. So, equip yourself with patience.
The first day, I only dealt with the cutting without forming the egg cups into flowers. This is what we’re going to do on this step as well.
Let’s form our little flowers!
As you see from the photo, I’ve got two rows of cut egg cups. In the same picture, you see the stages that the egg cups turn into a beautiful flower.
For the particular flower, I used two cut egg cups and one or two leaves from another egg cup.
The first row shows you the two egg cups in their initial form and how I slowly form them with the scissors until the last satage that you can see on the third row. Lastly, on the last row, you see the wrapped bud.
On the next picture, you can see how the flower is about to be wrapped without the glue and without coloring them. This way you can understand better how the flower is put together.
I follow the same logic with the second flower.
For the particular flower, I used three egg cups and cut them in three pieces, in the exact same way.
Starting from the left side, you see how the cut flower is shaped from beginning till end.
You see from the picture that I shaped five leaves from three egg cups.
I mark the egg cup in five equal parts and I cut them in such way so that you see the five shaped leaves.
Don’t worry too much about precision since they will all come nicely together when you wrap the flower.
Next picture shows you one egg cup placed within another so that you get an idea of the end flower’s final form.
While I place the third egg cup into the second, I put a bit of pressure on the leaves inwards so that I form the bud shape.
The egg cups from the blue egg carton box are smaller than the others.
As you see on the following picture, I used two egg cups and this is why the flower is bit smaller, like a small bud.
I cut both egg cups and shaped six leaves.
The first step is to design the leaves with a pencil and then once the design is clearly defined, I cut them with the scissors. The first egg cup is the base of the flower and the second one is the bud.
For the fourth flower, I used three egg cups. Two egg cups with four leaves and one with six.
The following picture shows you how I put everything together so you can understand the shape better .
For this flower, I used three egg cups. Similarly to the previous flowers, I’ve got two egg cups with four leaves and one with six.
The difference with the previous flower is the different way in shaping the flower leaves.
Here, you see how I put all the egg cups together to get this flower shape.
This is the last flower that we make. For this one, I used three egg cups, cut them in the same way with six pointy leaves.
And here’s how the flower looks like.
I make four leaves out of one egg cup just like you see on the following picture.
I decided to paint my leaves but it’s up to you to do the same or leave them as they are.
They’re now ready!
Once I’m done with cutting, I’m coloring the flowers and start applying the glue to put everything together.
For this reason, I use acrylic or plastic colors, wood glue and a silicone gun (don’t forget the silicone).
I use a plastic disposable plate to place my colors and the wood glue. I also use white color to create color mixes.
I begin coloring the flowers one by one.
Once I finish coloring one flower, I don’t wait for the paint to dry since it’s easier to shape the flower while it’s still wet. If the paint dries it’s going to get stiffer and harder to work with it.
I color the parts that will form the flower and right after I finish, I apply pressure on the petals so that I give them the desired shape in one go.
Next, I apply some wood glue on the back side of the second flower piece and I stick it on the base flower.
Now I’m going to work on the third piece that has six leaves.
I want to shape the bud and for this reason I apply pressure on the petals towards the center of the flower.
I put a little bit of wood glue on my fingers and I continue applying pressure on the petals until I manage to stabilize them and stick them together.
When I succeed sticking the petals together, I apply a bit of wood glue on the back side of the bud and stick it on the other two pieces of the flower that they’re already glued together.
Now that I put everything in place, it’s my last chance to form the flower the way I want.
Don’t worry if the paint strips off. It’s expected. Not to worry though because you can still color it once everything is dry and the flower pieces are well stuck together with the bud stable.
I follow the same procedure with the rest of the flowers.
Unfortunately, it takes a lot of time to finish everything but I’m sure you’ll enjoy every single step.
I would definitely advise you to separate the flowers by color instead of coloring one piece at a time.
This is particularly important because you’ll have a lot of paint on your palette and if you make a color mix that you like, you can use it all at once on the flowers that you want to color with the specific mix. For other flowers, you then create other color mixes.
You want to do that because it’s very challenging to get the same color mixes every time you attempt it and therefore, it’s better to separate the flowers by color. Once you finish with one set of flowers, you proceed to the next one and so on.
When I’m done with coloring, I leave everything to dry and I’ve got myself some beautiful flowers!!!
On a next tutorial, I’ll show you how to put these upcycled flowers in use and make upcycled wreath from newspapers! The result is absolutely stunning!
Until next time! Good luck with your creations and feel free to get in touch with me for any questions you might have.
